Countertop Calculator
Enter each countertop section, your island and backsplash height. You get the square footage, how many slabs to buy and the estimated cost.
How the countertop calculator works
Square footage is length × depth ÷ 144 for each section. Standard counters are 25 1/2" deep, which covers the 24" cabinet plus a 1 1/2" overhang. For an L-shaped or U-shaped counter, measure each section separately and don't count the corner square twice: run one section into the corner and stop the next one at the edge of the first.
The backsplash is the total section length times its height. Fabricators charge for the slab area they cut from, so 10% is added for seams and cutouts. Slab sizes vary by stone and supplier. A common standard quartz slab is about 120" × 55", or about 45 sq ft; change the slab size to match your supplier.
Questions
How many square feet is a 10 foot countertop?
At the standard 25 1/2" depth, 120" × 25.5" ÷ 144 = 21.25 sq ft before any backsplash or waste.
How many slabs do I need for a kitchen?
A kitchen with 120" and 96" sections, a 72" × 36" island and a 4" backsplash comes to 68.5 sq ft with 10% waste, which is 2 slabs of 45 sq ft.
How much does that kitchen cost at $60 per square foot?
68.5 sq ft at $60 is about $4,109. Ask your fabricator whether the price per sq ft includes edges, cutouts and installation.
